Sixteen guests, handpicked, gathered in a gorgeous, brand-new private members’ club in Clapham. Champagne on arrival, then two courses in their own private dining room, the most ordered dish, steak? – which felt entirely right for mid-December when the world outside is frantic and what people need most is something deeply, unambiguously satisfying. Gentlemen moved between courses, conversations deepened, and the room came alive in the way it only does when the right people are in it.

The evening might have ended there, but someone produced a box of swanky Christmas chocolates, fresh mint tea was poured, and the group gathered around a kitchen island as though they’d known each other for years. Numbers were exchanged, and a WhatsApp group was formed before anyone had reached their coat, which is, if you needed a sign, a rather good one.
